Laboratory Scientist (Life Sciences)

Develop, validate and perform a broad range of chemical and biochemical assays and procedures with limited supervision from line leader. Perform analyses to support innovation projects with the analysis of physiological samples and finished product.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Develop and perform chemical and biological assays as required to support the analytical needs of Nestle Purina Product Technology Center
2. Submit validation files to Nestle Research Center-Quality for the development of Laboratory Instructions
3. Develop new analytical methodologies to support quality, behavioral and nutritional initiatives
4. Perform validation studies of new and existing analytical methodologies
5. Evaluate new technologies & methods for potential use at Nestle Purina PTC
6. Participate as a project team member as assigned. Required activities include, but are not limited to:
• Provide effective project leadership for the projects assigned
• Assist in interpreting data
• Complete all required documentation and project reporting in a timely manner
• Ensure all appropriate documents and project records are filed in the Central Project Files, whether paper or electronic
• Lead small R&D projects, where applicable
7. Effectively communicate results through oral presentations, written technical documentation and R&D reports
8. Conduct all activities in compliance with the Nestle Good Laboratory Practices (nGLP) and all required Company policies and procedures
9. Develop, review & maintain SOPs, ICPs Technical Instructions related analytical procedures
10. Maintain accurate records/log of analytical requests and data
11. Prepare samples for shipping to external laboratories
12. Maintain laboratory equipment in working order and a safe, clean and sanitary work environment
13. Train & mentor others in the laboratory
14. Communicate and Support appropriately with other Applied Science Groups within R&D, Regional Laboratories and Operating Companies
15. Travel as needed
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Expand knowledge in scientific field (conferences, seminars, etc.)
2. Participate in Laboratory audits
3. Establish and maintain good relationships with vendors and counterparts at other Nestle operations by encouraging frequent informal communication
4. Additional duties as assigned
1. Master of Science or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or related discipline
2. 2 or more years of experience in the use of research techniques, experimental design and statistical analysis
3. Current hands-on experience with LC/MS, FT-IR, gas and liquid chromatography, mineral analysis, proximate analyses, wet chemistry and lipid analysis
4. Must be able to effectively communicate results through oral presentations and timely, written technical documentation and reports
5. Good interpersonal skills
6. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments/priorities utilizing organizational and project management skills
7. Computer literacy
8. Pro-Active/Self-Starter
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
1. Strong working knowledge of LC/MS
2. 5+ years of experience in the use of research techniques, experimental design and statistical analysis
