Position Summary:
Part of the Nestlé Group Legal & Compliance function, Legal R&D enables and protects Nestlé R&D Innovations through pragmatic legal services and business-driven IP protection.
As Patent Counsel for Beverages R&D, you will contribute to developing, implementing and delivering the IP strategy for Nestlé Product Technology Center (NPTC) Beverage, which drives discover, develop and deploy activities on coffee based beverages and creamers in all possible formats: soluble, portioned, roast & ground and liquid.
NPTC Beverage is the dynamic R&D structure based in Switzerland, USA and Singapore, which develops the products, processes and packaging that will delight our consumers today and tomorrow, combining unique scientific and technological knowhow to outstanding manufacturing excellence.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Be a Legal R&D IP Business Partner for the NPTC Beverage leadership team based in Marysville.
• Contribute to developing, implementing and delivering on the Beverages IP Strategy together with the R&D Counsel and IP Analysts, and in close partnership with the R&D teams.
• Lead business-driven patent filling and prosecution, freedom to operate assessments and oppositions of 3rd party patents, as well as defend against 3rd party oppositions.
• Contribute to managing the Beverages patent portfolio with business-alignment and rigorous cost management
• Advise on IP matters in R&D collaborations, including contributing to the drafting of R&D agreements.
• Enable new and accelerated approaches to develop new consumer-centric products, while ensuring adequate protection under tight timelines.
• Partner with the Legal R&D Litigation Lead on any category-specific IP disputes.
• Promote passion for IP across the Beverage category, through awareness, training and communication
• Contribute to awareness and enforcement of Nestlé technical IP in Beverages through our markets
Job Qualifications (Minimum Education, Experience, and Knowledge)
•    JD from an accredited law school
•    Background in food science / chemistry. Prior experience with the coffee business is an asset.
•    Preferably prior experience with developing business-driven IP strategies.
•    5+ years post-qualification professional experience with patent drafting, prosecution and FTO assessment.
•    Experience in international filing and enforcement strategies and leveraging IP rights beyond patents.
•    Experience in R&D contract drafting, in particular IP-related clauses
•    Service-oriented, pragmatic and hands-on, as well as a true team player able to successfully collaborate with Legal R&D colleagues around the globe.
